BYOD
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) at Jamison High School
What is BYOD?
BYOD stands for “Bring Your Own Device”. It is our programme that allows students to bring a personal laptop or tablet to school and connect it to the school’s wireless network to support learning.
Why do we use BYOD?
Digital devices and online services are a normal part of how students learn, communicate and create. Used well, they help students build skills for school and beyond. At Jamison High School, devices are used in class when they support an educational purpose, learning, wellbeing and improved outcomes.
How devices are used at school
• Devices are for learning: classwork, research, drafts, online classrooms and teacher-directed activities.
• Use of a device at particular times is always at the teacher’s discretion (some tasks are designed to be done without a device).
• Students must stay on task and only access material that is relevant to the lesson.
Approval and participation
A personal laptop/tablet can only be used at school with parent/guardian approval and school approval. Reading and following this BYOD information and the school BYOD policy is taken as that approval.
Student responsibilities (care, security and readiness)
Students are responsible for their device at all times:
• Bring it to school fully charged each day (charging at school is not provided).
• Use a protective case designed for the device.
• Keep the device clearly labelled with the student’s name.
• Look after repairs, replacement, updates and any required setup.
• Back up schoolwork regularly (cloud storage such as Google Drive/OneDrive is recommended).
Please note: the school is not responsible for loss, theft, damage, parts, or accessories. Families are encouraged to consider appropriate insurance cover.
Safe, responsible and respectful use
All students are expected to use digital devices and online services safely, responsibly and respectfully:
• Be respectful in all online communication. Cyberbullying (harassing, threatening, humiliating or intimidating others online) is not tolerated and may lead to disciplinary action.
• Do not record audio/video or take photos of staff or students without permission. Sharing unauthorised recordings or images can have serious consequences.
Internet safety and filtering
The school uses the Department of Education’s internet filtering on the school network. Students must log in through their Department of Education student portal to use the school Wi-Fi.
Because mobile phones can bypass filtered school internet, phones are not permitted to be used as BYOD devices under this policy.
Technical requirements (Wi-Fi)
To connect at school, devices must support the school’s Wi-Fi standard: 802.11n on 5 GHz (dual band). Devices that do not support this standard will not be able to connect.
Support and software
The school provides limited technical support for BYOD:
• We can help with connecting to the school Wi-Fi and basic network troubleshooting.
• Families and students are responsible for hardware issues, repairs, and installing required apps/software.
• If a device fails during a lesson, the student must continue learning using the available non-device options.
If specific software is needed for learning tasks, teachers may provide access via school desktop computer labs.
Privacy, inspections and consequences
Using a personal device at school is a privilege. If there is reasonable suspicion that policies or school rules have been breached, the school may require access to view school-related work and may inspect/impound the device as part of its processes. Misuse can result in loss of BYOD privileges and/or further disciplinary action.
